Random thoughts Friday, Volume CXLIX

  • George Santos got the Republicans to show the smallest amount of ethics.  Stress on the smallest. But Republican leadership voted against Santos’s expulsion from the House, which tells you all you need to know about the kinds of people Republicans like hanging around with.
  • How detailed is the work Jack Smith is doing?  The report of investigators asking about a Pence comma should tell all you need to know about how carefully they’re reviewing evidence and filings.  If Trump’s lawyers misplace a comma, it could end badly for their client.
  • Besides wiping the floor with DeSantis, Gavin Newsom did two things:  showed Democrats that you need to take Fox “News”  head-on, which Dems need to do to break the Trump hold.  The second thing he did:  showed Fox viewers what Democratic leaders looks like compared next to their GOP counterparts.
  • I won’t make any Oscar predictions for the new Trump biopic starring Sebastian Stan, but I would bet the house there will be various and sundry lawsuits from Mar-a-Lago.
  • The ruling that Trump can be sued for his actions leading to the January 6th attack could lead to another class action suit against Trump brought by the scores of officers injured in the January 6th attack.  Trump’s court docket just got busier.
  • Gaetz must be the next to go, and after the Ethics Committee report on him comes out, it won’t take multiple votes to expel him.  Even Republicans can’t stand him.
  • Rest in peace, Rosalynn, a graceful lady who spent her life serving others.  (Seriously, tho, can you imagine what a Fox “News” of the era would try to dig up on her?  “The First Lady is encouraging homelessness by feeding the poor.  Is that what we really want in the White House?”)
  • Wow, that DeSantis-Newsom debate was so embarrassing.  The two of them on the same stage represents the depth of the Democratic bench versus the Republican Little Leaguers.  Harris, Newsom, Buttigieg, et al simply outclass the entire GOP field–except, perhaps, Nikki Haley, who would make it a race.
  • Like so many conservatives of her generation, Sandra Day O’Connor death would no longer be considered a Republican in today’s climate.  She was pro-choice and pro-LGBTQ rights–both positions that are entirely consistent with conservatism.  The problem:  today’s Republicans aren’t conservatives.
  • How do I know MTG’s book sales are bogus?  You don’t expect people who don’t read to buy books.
  • You just knew something like the Moms for Liberty throuple story would emerge.  The loudest ones screaming about protecting children are the ones with the skeletons in their closets.  But don’t overlook that the guy in the story was the head of the state GOP.  That story should leave the state Party in further shambles going into 2024.
  • You can’t use every jelly for a PBJ.  Grape is the traditional favorite, but all the -berry flavors work.  Strangely, different apple jellies end in different results.  But if you come at me with a peach or apricot, I’m pushing it away.
  • Clooney-Pitt is a modern-day Newman-Redford, a movie duo often overlooked for their comic timing.
  • Don’t drag Melania Trump for going to a former First Lady’s funeral.  She was far more respectful than her husband would have been.  (And when he dies, I’m sure her tennis coach will be there to comfort her.)
  • The Moms for Liberty head should release a statement saying she read “Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit” as a teenager and look what happened.  Y’know, just to prove a point.
  • I have to be honest:  I’m very disappointed in the baked mac-and-cheese I made for Thanksgiving this year.  (Mrs. Jack agrees.)  Alton Brown let me down. But next year, I’m finding a good, cheesy, saucy recipe.
  • Can Team Dark Brandon crank the hell out of promoting this administration’s successes, like the upward 5.2% GDP revision for last quarter?  This administration’s accomplishments are piling up, but they’re not getting volume.  I’m hearing too much about Trump–even the negatives–and we need to get the country focused on the positives again.
