Speaking with a Financial Times reporter about the wreckage of his failed career in politics, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said his relationship with disgraced former President Trump was like a marriage a frank and sadly pretty accurate admission if you add the word “abusive.”

Because you love this person, would you express it stronger than you would express to somebody you met on the street? Every relationship has its ebbs and flows. Those relationships that are closer have more emotion. I couldn’t have a relationship with President Trump where we smiled at each other every day.”
