Random thoughts Friday, Volume CLXII

  • Yes, the Trump trial schedule got thrown into the shredder, but deep down inside, you always knew the Republicans on the Supreme Court would intervene to make sure things didn’t get resolved speedily. My surprise comes from how bunglingly obvious the conservatives on the bench made their effort to push back the trial.  So now, we just have to beat him at the ballot box, again.
  • May Alexei Navalny one day be seen as Russia’s Patrick Henry.  Rest in peace.
  • Through all the frustration with the trial schedules, let Donald Trump’s humiliation at having to admit he couldn’t put up the entire amount of the New York civil judgment lighten the load.  For the first time, he had to publicly acknowledge he did not have the wealth he claimed and he tried to lowball the Court.
  • I hope the next GOP Senate leader is as zoomorphic as his predecessor.
  • While no voter should be overlooked in the upcoming election, the Michigan “no candidate” effort to show discontent with Biden wasn’t exceptionally effective even though it got 13.2% support, particularly when you consider 10.7% of Michigan Dems were uncommitted during Obama’s reelection primary in 2012.
  • Slut shaming seems to be the fashion in Fulton County because what happened down there was nothing close to a sincere effort to seek justice.
  • Thing to love about the week, part two:  He complained he may have to sell a building to raise the cash.  Well, yeah, bitch.  If you can only learn your lesson through pain, you’re gonna feel pain.  Sell the damn building. Pay the damn money.
  • Why hasn’t Clarence Thomas recused himself from the Trump case?  If the Supreme Court took the case to make sure it entered its opinion into the historical record, shouldn’t that record be unsullied by an obvious conflict of interest?
  • Public dwile flonking is legal in Britain. Hm.
  • Smart move of Biden to do the split screen with Trump at the border.  Biden comes across as measure, reasonable and composed versus Trump’s xenophobia.  Plus, he gets to highlight that Trump’s immigration policies failed to boot.
  • While I typically take cream and sugar in my coffee in the morning, I will order a good cup of black coffee or espresso before ever getting a java beverage with whipped cream or sprinkles.  Simpler is better and typically tastier.
  • Republicans who support an adjudicated rapist for President say they’re pro-woman while cutting rights to reproductive care, birth control, IVF, and equal pay, while blocking laws that would prevent domestic abusers from buying guns.  Women will remember in November.
  • For the first time in decades, we do not subscribe to our local newspaper, not even the digital version.  We cannot support the efforts of David Smith and Armstrong Williams to undermine the fabulous legacy of The Sun.
  • Nothing makes the house smell better than baking bread.  Cookies are fine, yes, but if you really want to spur sensory happiness, bake bread.  Even if it’s Pillsbury premade dough, the aroma will be better than any perfumed candle.
  • I watch a lot of documentaries, particularly about recent history.  It’s telling that I’ve yet to find one telling the story of January 6th in a positive light, from the perspective of the Hero Insurrectionist.  D’Souza’s 2,000 Mules was conservatives’ attempt to justify overthrowing the election, but no one has tried to justify the violence at the Capitol… because they can’t.
  • It just hit me what about Jesse Watters drives me nuts–besides his idiocy, I mean–and I might not be able to unsee it:  It’s like he’s constantly doing a bad Chandler Bing imitation.
  • Because of varying schedules, last week became a Soup Week:  on Monday, make a pot of homemade soup and bread from scratch, and we eat dinner throughout the week when we can warm up a bowl.  The Mediterranean split pea soup is particularly good for this role because aging enhances the flavors, i.e., leftovers are good.
  • March, when the daily wardrobe options can run from t-shirts to thermals on the same day.
  • Celebrated a quadriversary with Mrs. Jack on Thursday night.  It’s what you do when a first date on February 29th works out.  (Love ya, hon!)
