“Voters in Maine and voters in Maine’s 2nd congressional district value their independence, but they also value fairness and playing by the rules. If Nebraska’s Republican Governor and Republican-controlled Legislature were to change their electoral system this late in the cycle in order to unfairly award Donald Trump an additional electoral vote, I think the Maine Legislature would be compelled to act in order to restore fairness to our country’s electoral system. It is my hope and the hope of my colleagues in Maine that the Nebraska Republican Party decides not to make this desperate and ill-fated attempt to sway the 2024 election,” says Maine state House Majority Leader Maureen Terry in a statement on Nebraska Republicans’ plans to switch from apportioning one Electoral College vote per district to a full-state winner-take-all like the other 48, evening the score to get to 270.
It’s not like this was the absolute, most obvious upshot when Charlie Kirk and his fanboys started applying the pressure to the Nebraska GOP last month and then it got to Trump – and the fat fuck posted “Most Nebraskans have wanted to go back to this system for a very long time, because it’s what 48 other States do,” emphasis ours – or when a lot of the circlejerkers hyping this were laying out how switching Nebraska could result in a 269-269 Electoral College tie and a de facto Trump win if Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada flip red. There was just a hope that Maine Dems would be keeping an eye on the situation and be ready to respond. It’s still not a 100 percent sure thing they would.
But fucking seriously, what a bunch of dipshits, lol. If anything pushing the Nebraska GOP into changing their EC vote payout is actually riskier than leaving it alone: Biden flipped NE-2 from Trump in 2020 after Hillary lost it in 2016. Donald is 2-for-2 in Maine’s 2nd. All Trump can hope for – if Nebraska Republicans do follow his commands – is that maybe then Maine Democrats don’t get their shit together to respond (probably not a safe bet given the D trifecta that just very recently joined the National Interstate Popular Vote Compact which would do away with their split votes by default). If they do then it’s a net gain of zero at the expense of an opportunity to flip NE-2 back to red. All of it speaks to Charlie Kirk’s strategic acumen, as vast as his face relative to his head.
