“Members of President Joe Biden’s family have discussed what an exit from his campaign might look like, according to two people familiar with the discussions,” NBC News reports in the lede to their story headlined “Biden’s family starts discussing his exit plan from the 2024 race,” which we copied verbatim to not mince words about the significance (if true) of the reporting.
Again, and we cannot emphasize this enough, the official campaign/White House line is ALWAYS going to be deny, deny, deny stories like this up until the very last moment. That doesn’t mean something is or is not going to happen, it’s simply to say treat the denials as something completely independent of the pace and volume of the leaks indicating the opposite. Saying that it’s the “Biden family” isn’t specific enough and it could very well be a leak from some aide with an agenda because everything we’ve seen so far has told us that it’s the family that has been most resistant to outside pleas to get the president to capitulate and step aside for another nominee.
Or it’s a real sign that he’s starting to cave. But any denials will be neither here nor there.
