Trying to come up with a hypothetical shoe-on-the-other-foot here and it’s hard. Not just because there’s (obviously) no left wing analogue to Kyle Rittenhouse. Probably the better comparison is the Israel-Palestine situation, where it wasn’t any one singular figure but it was more like trying to tell people that abandoning Biden for supporting Israel’s absolutely horrific response to the October 7th attacks would help Trump win which would make life far worse for the Palestinians than it already is.
That was and to an extent still (though not as salient as it once was) is pretty fucking frustrating, so in that sense we can empathize while still enjoying the rage. Rittenhouse may indeed actually move some votes away from Trump. Probably not that many – maybe hundreds at most. Certainly nothing on the scale of the pro-Palestinian lefties actively sabotaging American democracy. Maybe this MAGA freakout is less of an election thing and merely an emotional outburst.
