Former Gabonese President Ali Bongo told the ruling military junta that he’s reaffirming his “withdrawal from political life and the definitive renunciation of any national ambition” apparently in the hope that his wife and son will be let out of the clink where they await trial on some corruption charges that are probably correct in spirit if not in letter, the BBC reports.
“I call on my country, its leaders and my fellow citizens to renounce vengeance and to write its next history with harmony and humanity,” Bongo added in the letter, pledging never to pose any threat to Supreme General Brice Oligui Ngeuma’s promised transition to back to civilian-ish rule.
