Federal personnel either with or detailed to FEMA’s response efforts in the western North Carolina counties devastated by Hurricane Helene were forced to flee their posts and take shelter Saturday following reports of a column of MAGA militia men “out hunting FEMA,” the Washington Post reports.
“FEMA has advised all federal responders Rutherford County, NC, to stand down and evacuate the county immediately. The message stated that National Guard troops ‘had come across x2 trucks of armed militia saying there were out hunting FEMA,’” a US Forest Service official working with FEMA wrote in a message to other agencies at about 1 PM on Saturday. “The IMTs [incident management teams] have been notified and are coordinating the evacuation of all assigned personnel in that county,” the email continued. Officials vouched to the Post the authenticity of the email but haven’t yet confirmed the credibility of the threat itself. Workers returned to the county on Sunday but operating under even more heightened alert given the touchy situation with these crazy assholes.
“FEMA continues to support communities impacted by Helene and help survivors apply for assistance,” an official told the Post, anonymously. “For the safety of our dedicated staff and the disaster survivors we are helping, FEMA has made some operational adjustments,” with another saying they’re staying put at secure, fixed locations instead of the standard door to door procedure.
