“The US is stepping up its intelligence-gathering efforts regarding Greenland, drawing America’s spying apparatus into President Trump’s campaign to take over the island, according to two people familiar with the effort. Several high-ranking officials under Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard issued a ‘collection emphasis message’ to intelligence-agency heads last week. They were directed to learn more about Greenland’s independence movement and attitudes on American resource extraction on the island,” the Wall Street Journal reports, copied verbatim here as to not mince words on what would appear to be a pretty fucking serious escalation of imperial ambition.
It’s also pretty astonishingly goddamned stupid that this would even leak out in the first place since the whole point of intel operations is to keep them secret. If there’s any less bad news here it’s that the operations seem to be mostly or even entirely political in nature, that the MAGA Reich is trying to psy-op political local for a takeover rather than by force, as the mission is “to identify people in Greenland and Denmark who support US objectives for the island,” per the Journal. Still insane.
