Oh my God. Guys, you know how convicted felon President Trump was going on and on about how much investment he secured for massive tech projects during his Middle East tour and the number kept changing from like $2 trillion to $5 trillion and $7 trillion? He was right that new partnerships between US tech companies and rich Arab backers would result in huge deals. It’s actually true because Axios just reported that OpenAI will build a huge new data center with UAE backing.
In the UAE. Not in Klanston, Alabama or North Cousinfingerer, West Virginia or New Auschwitz, Idaho but in the good ol UA of E. “By establishing the world’s first Stargate outside of the US in the UAE, we’re transforming a bold vision into reality,” OpenAI’s Sam Altman said in a statement. “It’s a step toward ensuring some of this era’s most important breakthroughs – safer medicines, personalized learning, and modernized energy – can emerge from more places and benefit the world.”
Axios, per usual, carries the Trump-Middle East aurocrat axis’s water, writing “For every dollar the UAE invests in Stargate UAE and the broader data center project in Abu Dhabi, UAE will invest an additional dollar in US AI infrastructure as well — including Stargate,” a sentence composed without condition or extrinsic attribution such as “Officials involved with the project say…” or “According to a factsheet issued by…” No, they just blithely print it as if it were a statement of present reality.
Now maybe one would be more likely to let that slide if, well, you know, the fucking Emiratis had simultaneously announced that they would invest the equal amount to build this or that new major AI center in Klanston or North Cousinfingerer or New Auschwitz and this were mentioned in the same article. But nah. Data center for UAE, Emirati investment and US jobs for hillbilly infidels TBD.
