“Maria, this is one of those examples where you’ve got, as we did in the civil rights movement, governors and mayors who simply don’t wanna comply with the laws that were passed. In Karen Bass’s case, even during her time. She knew what the laws were, and now she’s just ignoring them,” said oily car thief California Congressman Darrell Issa, putting ICE agents on the same level as the Little Rock Nine and the march on Selma led by late Congressman John Lewis, once a colleague of Issa’s, who started a car alarm company after a career in stealing them from other people.
Shortly after that bit, other former Issa colleague, now-Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was on MSNBC calling the whole deployment a joke, saying “On Saturday night, the president tweeted that ‘because of the great work of the National Guard, the protests and the violence was curtailed.’ The National Guard wasn’t even here. They didn’t even arrive until the next day. That’s why it’s very hard to not see this as a stunt or test case,” for expanded deployments into cities.
In related news, CNN’s Natasha Bertrand reports that the 700 Marines mobilized to the Los Angeles area on Monday night are still undergoing training as of Wednesday morning, and it is not yet clear when they will be employed onto the streets to help with protests, per a US Northern Command spokesperson. The Marines “have NOT completed their [Standing Rules for the Use of Force] and nonlethal weapons training, and I do not have an estimate of when they will be employed by Task Force 51,” the spokesman said, further underscoring the waste, fraud, and abuse of time and money.
