Yeah, maybe the headline’s a little too gentle but holy fucking shit this is one of those times when it’s simply too hard to respond proportionately to this level of batshittery. Like if the fat bastard had just left it at “Here is another example of a crazy pro-algae (likely paid) protestor,” then it’d be out of character for him to be sorta poking fun at himself a little tiny bit – and yet such levity would still be an adequate enough explanation. It’s not like he’s never self-deprecated, if much gentler than this.
The “The sign says, ‘First they came for the algae…’ which is in reference to a famous post-WW2 statement about Germans not speaking out against the Nazis: ‘…then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak for me,'” is not self-satire. That’s Trump being seriously “offended” and very much on-brand given his very well-documented love of messianic blasphemy and iconoclasm. This is real Trump.
