At least 20 people have been killed and dozens of structures collapsed after a 7.4 magnitude quake struck western Colombia on Monday, the AP reports. Despite the extreme depth of 66 miles, the quake inflicted serious damage on the region and into neighboring Ecuador. Colombia’s seismological agency called the temblor the strongest in over a decade to hit the country.
The tectonic setting is fairly distant from the shallow epicenters of the double 7.2 and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes that struck central Venezuela in late June, killing over 5,000 people.
