Republican New York Congressman George Santos signed a statement admitting to a Brazilian court that he committed theft as part of an agreement that would see Brazilian prosecutors drop criminal charges and stop a possible extradition request, the Washington Post reports.
As part of the deal, Santos agrees to pay a fine and restitution totalling a little less than $5,000 within 30 days. He admitted to writing two bad checks to buy clothes and shoes using checks stolen from a man his mother was caring for. Santos now only faces criminal charges in the United States, unless he violates the terms of the Brazilian agreement.
