The Republican-dominated Oklahoma state House passed a bill Monday that would make performing any abortion a felony in the state, punishable by up to ten years in prison and a $100,000 fine, the Washington Post reports.
The bill, which was passed by the state Senate last year, will now go to the desk of Republican Governor Kevin Stitt, who has stated he would sign a measure to make abortion illegal. The bill is scheduled to go into effect this summer when the legislature adjourns, if it is not blocked by court action.
Unlike other bills passed in Republican-dominated states, the Oklahoma bill is not dependent on the expected Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade. Many SCOTUS watchers expect the conservative-dominated Supreme Court to overturn or drastically weaken the abortion protections provided by Roe.
