Michigan’s Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson says she was told Donald Trump proposed arresting her for treason and executing her because she refused to throw out the state’s 2020 election results and hand the state to Trump, NBC News reports.
Benson says she was told by someone familiar with the discussion that Trump was incensed that Michigan authorities found no irregularities after Trump and his cabal claimed, without evidence, thousands of fake votes were cast in the state.
“It was surreal and I felt sad,” Benson said in an interview that will be broadcast Thursday. “It certainly amplified the heightened sense of anxiety, stress and uncertainty of that time — which I still feel in many ways — because it showed there was no bottom to how far [Trump] and his supporters were willing to stoop to overturn or discredit a legitimate election.”
Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich denied the conversation ever took place, citing mysterious sources who could delve into Benson’s mind: “I have it on good authority that Secretary Benson knowingly lied throughout her interview with NBC News.”
