Random thoughts Friday, Volume LXXXIV

  • The sneaky effectiveness of Joe Biden in getting landmark legislation passed regarding taxes, gun control, the environment, energy production, student loan cancelation and health care is the polar opposite of the in-you-face power of Dark Brandon.  Joe’s the train engine that just gets shit down without any fanfare.
  • As much as I like having a president who’s not constantly on social media bragging about his claimed achievements to “own the libs,” Biden’s team needs to get out and celebrate these victories if they’re going to mean anything during the midterms.
  • Simple test to see if Trump knew what he had at Mar-a-Lago:  ask him, document by document, what was classified in each and what he declassified.  Match it to declassification orders and classification records.  If Trump can’t specify what he declassified, then that information isn’t declassified.  He can’t say, “Well, everything in that box was declassified.”  It’s the information that’s declassified, not the pieces of paper in the box.
  • Tuesday’s primary results are just the start of a downhill slide for GOP hopes.  The Senate is most likely going to stay in Democratic hands–with more of a majority.  And now, it looks like keeping the House is rising in possibility.

  • I’m REALLY glad to see the White House go after the hypocritical Republican members of Congress who took hundreds of thousands in PPP handouts–without repaying them–but lambast student loan debt forgiveness as “socialist.”  Go on the offensive.  Highlight their hypocrisy.  While not true for many Republican voters, hypocrisy turns off Democrats and independents.
  • According to FiveThirtyEight, Joe Biden’s job approval is polling at 41.7% on his 584th day in office.  In his 584th day in office, Ronald Reagan had a 40.9% job approval average.
  • Republicans in 2016:  “They’re not prosecuting Hillary Clinton because they think the politically connected don’t have to comply with the law!”  Republicans in 2020:  “How dare you think about prosecuting Donald Trump!  Laws don’t apply to him!”
  • Still shocks me how bad Trump fucked himself over to the point of not being able to get competent legal representation to work these national security cases.  While the Party of Personal Responsibility whines about how unfair Trump is being treated, scores of lawyers he didn’t pay or refused to listen to are laughing that he had to hire an attorney who just showed up on a Zoom call.
  • Strange how the same people complaining about Biden’s popular college loan forgiveness because they don’t want tax dollars being used for private education are the same ones who support school voucher programs to send students to private schools.
  • The electorate is learning that simply having a personality does not make a candidate suitable for office.  The GOP has yet to catch up to voters, and Mitch McConnell’s already recognized Republicans’ endorsement of people solely for their name recognition–Oz, Walker and Vance–will end up costing them dearly in the midterms.
  • Jared Kushner is going on his book pitching tour trying to brand himself as some great statesman, claiming he brought peace to the Middle East.  He got three Arab countries to sign treaties with Israel.  All three had previously established trade with Israel and exchanged diplomats with Israel, and none of them were ever at war with or even fired a shot at Israel.  Kushner didn’t achieve peace; he finished paperwork.
  • Ron DeSantis declared war on “woke” people.  The thing is, neither he nor any other Republican can define “woke” without being exposed as the asshole he is.  Woke simply means being respectful of other people’s beliefs, backgrounds and situations.  It means being considerate of others.  It means not being an asshole.  Being an asshole, however, is part and parcel with being a Republican today.
  • I saw a brown car from a recent model year on the road this week.  A brown sedan.  Not an SUV or crossover; not bronze, coffee or tan.  Just a brown four-door.  Can’t think about the last time I saw I brown car on the road that wasn’t from the 1980s or earlier.
  • Can we finally dispose of the idea that the fourth text message you send me today is going to be The One that will prompt me to donate to your campaign?  It wasn’t happening with the first one, and it won’t happen with the fourth.  I’ll donate when I can, to whom I want, when the desire strikes me, not because you’re pestering me.
  • When I was a kid, the highlight of the summer was visiting Brigantine Castle, a four-story walk-through haunted house that could never be operated today because it was a genuine fire trap.  Cheesy by modern standards–and also likely by contemporary ones–Brigantine Castle and its cousins offered low-tech sensory frights.  No digital screens, no massive special effects.  The cast just made you frightened by good ol’ fashioned manipulation.
  • Least favorite “seasonal flavors”–and I’m tempted to say, “All of them”–but the early introduction of pumpkin-spice everything has me thinking about how much I dislike egg nog and chocolate-mint everything at Christmas and strawberries in Spring.  About the only one I agree with is turkey at Thanksgiving.
  • Happy National Dog Day to our four-legged friends and the bipedal creatures with opposable thumbs who are responsible for feeding them.
