A number of Twitter accounts for high profile people like Elon Musk, Joe Biden, Bill Gates and Kanye West appear to have been hacked by vandals pitching cryptocurrencies, according to The New York Times.
The phony tweets appear to direct people to sent Bitcoin to an anonymous account, promising to double their money in minutes.
The one on Joe Biden’s account, for example, read: “I am giving back to the community. All bitcoin sent to the address below will be sent back doubled! If you send $1,000, I will send back $2,000. Only doing this for 30 minutes.”
Within minutes, Twitter removed all the suspicious tweets and locked down the accounts for a period of time after similar messags started reappearing. Still, nearly 300 people responded to the scam message, sending $100,000 to the anonymous account.
