The US hit a new high in its 7-day running average of new reported daily cases of the coronavirus at 68,680, the 42nd straight day of increases in that metric, according to worldometers.info.
Topping the nation, Florida recorded 12,400 new cases today and 87 fatalities from the disease. Texas and California finished second and third, respectively, in both categories.
On the global front, South American nations Chile, Peru and Brazil continue to see relative spikes in fatalities. Chile recently leapfrogged the US in fatalities per capita, but because Chile has just 6% the population of the US, its number of fatalities needed to increase in that statistic is much lower.
