In Scandinavian lore, the kraken is a giant squid-like creature big enough to devour ships at sea. The legend dates back to at least the 13th Century, with sailors saying they encountered the monster, which was said to snatch crewmen off ships and pull wayward craft underwater.
The NHL awarded its 32nd team franchise to Seattle in 2018, starting speculation about the name. The logo of the new team will be a stylized serpent-like “S” with a red kraken eye in the center, colored Columbia and navy blue.
