A nine-year-old girl from Putnam County became Florida’s youngest fatality to the coronavirus as the state sees a continued spike in cases, CNN reports.
The unidentified girl did not have any known underlying conditions, Putnam County Health Officer Mary Garcia said. The girl had not traveled out of the area and she had no known contacts with anyone infected with COVID.
Florida has seen at least four other children die from the coronavirus, including two 17-year-olds and two 11-year-olds. More than 23,000 cases of pediatric coronavirus had been reported in the state as of July 17th.
The Florida state government is encouraging schools to open with in-classroom instruction, even in the face of a spike in cases in the state.
