Senate republicans will propose a plan to cut federal unemployment supplemental payments from $600 to $200 per week in a $1 trillion relief plan, the Washington Post reports.
With the unemployment rate officially at 11.1% (although the Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the official number is likely three full points than the actual number), Democrats have supported a plan to keep the supplement at $600 through the end of the year.
The GOP Senators wish to slash the supplement until states can implement a process to ensure that unemployment benefits amount to no more than 70% of the income the individual earned before being laid off.
However, the republican plan does not address plans for funding additional costs such as health insurance or income for self-employed individuals who did not collect a paycheck.
The House passed in May a $3 trillion comprehensive aid plan that would have extended unemployment supplemental plans; rent and mortgage protection against eviction; medical coverage; and assistance to small business.
