First Lady Melania Trump, whose Christmas decor choices have been compared to The Handmaid’s Tale and The Shining, will oversee a renovation to the famed White House Rose Garden, CNN reports.
Previously occupied with supervising the building of a tennis pavilion on the White House grounds as a pandemic and economic strife cascaded across the country, the third Mrs. Trump will focus on the three-week project to upgrade some infrastructure in the half acre garden.
The rose garden was originally planted on the grounds by the first wife of Woodrow Wilson, but the current incarnation was created by Jackie Kennedy in 1962 with the help of horticulturist and philanthropist Rachel “Bunny” Mellon.
The project will include upgraded electrical systems and pathways around the garden, as well as a walkway from the Palm Room to the south grounds.
The upgraded electrical systems are needed to accommodate media crews covering statements and briefings made in the Rose Garden. White House staffers have said that President Trump prefers holding briefings in the Rose Garden rather than the Press Room because he believes natural light is more flattering to his complexion.
