Contradicting an earlier statement, the republican National Committee has not committed to banning media from covering President Trump’s renomination vote at the republican National Convention, which is scheduled for August 24th in Charlotte, the Washington Post reports.
“We are still working through logistics and press coverage options,” one of the officials said in a statement Sunday to the Post, which spot to two of the officials not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
Multiple outlets reported the decision to bar media from covering the republican nomination process, claiming it was due to the threat presented by the coronavirus.
This is the latest in a string of actions and reversals republicans have made regarding the convention. First, they scheduled the event for Charlotte, but then planned a parallel event for Jacksonville, Florida when Trump decided he wanted a crowded arena for his acceptance speech, which North Carolina would not accommodate.
The Florida portion of the convention was canceled as the coronavirus swept through the state, leaving a minimal convention to be held in Charlotte. Trump has bragged that his acceptance speech will be nothing like anyone has ever seen before, but he lacked specifics about the program.
