Michigan State Senator Tom Barrett, a vocal critic of Governor Gretchen Witmer’s public policies to stem the tide of the coronavirus in the state, has tested positive for the virus, the Washington Post reports.
A member of the Michigan Army National Guard, Barrett tested positive during a routine screening of Guard members. The 39-year-old father of three is now self-isolating in his home.
Barrett was one of the leaders of a republican action to revoke a 75-year-old provision in Michigan law that provides the governor with broad powers in a statewide emergency. Barrett and others apparently found requiring stay-at-home and mask-wearing mandates during a pandemic excessive abuse of those powers.
