Ken Cuccinelli told lawmakers Tuesday that Department of Homeland Security officers will no longer wear camouflage tactical uniforms in response to concerns that the federal agencies under DHS command, specifically Customs and Border Protection units, have become to militarized, the Washington Post reports.
Cuccinelli, whose title at DHS is Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Secretary because he never gained Senate confirmation, made a written statement to a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing.
“To address concerns about military-like appearance of some of Customs [and] Border Protection’s (CBP) officers’ uniforms, which are the normal uniforms used by some CBP teams in the course of regular duty, we are moving rapidly to replace those uniforms for those personnel,” Cuccinelli wrote.
The DHS will issue more-standard green uniforms with obvious agency emblems to replace the camouflage tactical gear.
