With estimates from 30 to 50 people killed and 2,500 injured, the blast that rocked downtown Beirut today has damaged significant parts of the city, with the explosion causing damage six miles from the warehouse site.
Authorities are labeling the explosion an accident. The warehouse that exploded stored fireworks–and by some accounts, military-grade explosive material. The blast happened just after 6 p.m. local time.
Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab, whose office is located just blocks from the blast and saw significant damage including doors blow off hinges, said a thorough investigation will be conducted and the incident “will not pass without accountability,” CNN reports.
Many countries, including France and Israel, have pledge support to help the Lebanese people. There has been no comment from President Trump or the White House.
