The United States returned to its dubious position as the worldwide leader of new coronavirus cases, recording more than 63,000 cases and close to 1,300 fatalities today, according to worldometers.info.
For the first time in at least three weeks, the US did not have a single state registering more than 8,000 cases. California, Texas and Florida all had more than 7,000 daily new cases. Florida, it should be noted, did not have state-sponsored coronavirus testing sites open for five days, from last Thursday night until Wednesday morning, due to Tropical Storm Isaias.
Texas led the nation with 228 fatalities recorded. California and Florida both had more than 180 deaths.
