Ryan Holets, a New Mexico police officer, told the story about how he adopted the unborn child of a heroin addict in a moving story that had nothing to do with Trump.
However, Holets said, “President Trump declared the opioid crisis to be a public health emergency, and then secured $6 billion in new federal funding to help American opioid abuse.” Holets went on to talk about additional funding for addressing the opioid crisis.
Holets said that in 2018, drug overdose deaths decreased for the first time in over thirty years.
[FACT CHECK: When Trump took office in 2017, he appointed his son-in-law, Jared Kushner–someone with no health care, social work or drug counseling experience–to spearhead the fight against opioid abuse. In 2019, deaths from opioid overdoses hit an all-time high.]
Holets continued: “We’re seeing that doctors are writing fewer prescriptions for opioid pain drugs.”
[FACT CHECK: The number of prescriptions for opioids has been dropping since 2012, according to the CDC. That trend has continued under Trump.]
