In an interview with Fox Business “News” Stuart Varney Thursday morning, President Trump cited his pride as a reason for not coming together with Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, HuffPost reports.
Last week, one day after leaving Walter Reed Military Medical Center where he was treated with steroids for coronavirus, Trump tweeted that he was halting all relief package negotiations with Democrats. That send the markets plummeting.
Trump then started backpedaling as he felt the political repercussions of his demand. After a series of tweets calling for various aid packages, Trump tweeted “go big or go home!” and said he supported a package bigger than the $2.2 trillion proposed by Democrats.
Varney asked why Trump wouldn’t agree to Pelosi’s relief proposal. “She wants to bail out badly run Democrat states and cities,” Trump said. “She wants money for things that you would never ― just, your pride couldn’t let it happen.”
The Democratic proposal provides funds for state and local governments–without regard to what Party sits in the executive seat–which have been struck with losses of revenue due to the economic downturn and increases in coronavirus-related costs.
The White House, with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin negotiation instead of Trump, has countered with a $1.8 trillion package which give Trump hundreds of billions to disperse at his sole discretion. The Senate will vote on a $500 billion aid bill to be presented by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell next week; it will not pass.
