Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said today that if there’s any hope of passing a coronavirus relief bill before Election Day, the White House and the Democrats must be done in the next 48 hours, CNN reports.
“The 48 only relates to if we want to get it done before the election, which we do,” Pelosi said on ABC’s “This Week.” “But we’re saying to them we have to freeze the design on some of these things. Are we going with it or not? And what is the language.”
The Trump Administration has been wavering on its desire to pass a coronavirus relief bill. Nearly two weeks ago, Trump tweeted that he “instructed my representatives to stop negotiating until after the election when, immediately after I win, we will pass a major Stimulus Bill….”
Just this past Wednesday, Trump tweeted, “STIMULUS! Go big or go home!!!” and told Fox “News” interviewers that he wanted to pass a stimulus larger than the Democrats’ proposal.
However, the Senate will be a stumbling block for any negotiated deal between the White House and Democrats. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could not wrangle his caucus to pass any type of relief bill after the House passed on in May. McConnell has largely been sidelined in these negotiations because of his inability to bring consensus to the republican side.
McConnell has stated that he will bring two relief bills to the floor of the Senate this week, which total $500 billion in aid, far short of the $1.8 the White House is proposing or the $2.2 billion Democrats seek.
President Trump desperately needs something that he can label a “win” on the campaign trail. His handling of the coronavirus pandemic has widely been seen as a failure, and he’s now trailing Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in polling on who would handle economic matters better.
