The Senate Judiciary Committee, absent of any of its Democratic members, passed the recommendation for Amy Coney Barrett to fill the Supreme Court seat opened with the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Committee rules require that any vote on a nominee must have at least two members of the minority party in attendance. Chairman republican Lindsey Graham decided to ignore the rule and call for the vote. The rule is in place to ensure members of the majority party do not simply call an impromptu meeting to ram through partisan nominations.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said last night that Democrats will appeal the vote to the Senate Parliamentarian, who will decide if the rule was violated, forcing a series of new procedural vote.
