Former astronaut Mark Kelly, the husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, has officially been declared the winner of the Arizona Senate race, defeating republican incumbent Martha McSally, Business Insider reports.
Kelly took 51.71% of the vote. He will be the fifth member of Congress who has been to space. John Glenn (D-Ohio Senator) and Harrison “Jack” Schmitt (R-New Mexico Senator) were both elected after their space travels. Two sitting members of Congress, Jake Garn (R-Utah Senator) and Bill Nelson (D-Florida Senator) flew on space shuttle missions.
Jack Swigert, who was part of the historic and heroic Apollo 13 mission, was elected to the House from Colorado, but died before taking office.
