The City of Louisville has started formal proceedings to fire the two officers still on the police force who were part of the raid that ended with the homicide of Breonna Taylor, USA Today reports.
Detectives Joshua Jaynes and Myles Cosgrove both received pretermination letters stating they would be involuntarily dismissed from the Louisville Metro Police Department. The letters advise the pair of an upcoming administrative hearing to formally decide the matter.
After an investigation by the department’s Professional Standards Unit, Jaynes was found to have violated department procedures for preparation for a search warrant execution and truthfulness, according to his lawyer. The rationale for Cosgrove’s dismissal was not released publicly by Cosgrove or the department.
In Jaynes’ predetermination letter, interim chief of police Yvette Gentry wrote, “Your actions have brought discredit upon yourself and the department. Your conduct has severely damaged the image our department has established within our community.”
Cosgrove and Jaynes were part of a three-person team that raided Taylor’s apartment and fired 17 shots into her apartment. A shot from Cosgrove’s gun killed Taylor. Cosgrove and Jaynes may face other charges, locally or federally, for their role in the homicide.
The third officer, Jonathan Mattingly, was fired from the police department and charged with three counts of wanton endangerment for firing shots blindly from the patio into the apartment, with many rounds going through walls into a neighboring apartment with three residents.
