Cleta Mitchell, an election lawyer whose involvement in lame duck president Donald Trump’s effort to undermine the Georgia presidential election was disclosed when a recording of the call was made public by the Washington Post on Sunday, has resigned from the law firm in which she was a partner, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.
“Cleta Mitchell has informed firm management of her decision to resign from Foley & Lardner effective immediately,” said a statement from Dan Farrell, spokesman for the firm. “Ms. Mitchell concluded that her departure was in the firm’s best interests, as well as in her own personal best interests. We thank her for her contributions to the firm and wish her well.”
The law firm had previously announced that it was “concerned” about Mitchell’s previously undisclosed involvement with the Trump campaign, given that the partners in the firm had voted to avoid any representation of candidates in the November election.
On Sunday, the Washington Post released the audio of a phone call Trump, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and others made to Georgia election officials, including Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Department of State general counsel Ryan Germany.
In the recording, Meadows introduces people who were sitting in on the call for the Trump campaign, including Mitchell, which was the first time her involvement was announced, a revelation that was apparently not known by her firm or other Republicans.
