Random thoughts Friday

  • It so nice having a slow news week when you just sit back and relax.
  • If Donald Trump doesn’t have a Twitter account, does he still have followers?
  • In the melee of this week, the biggest thing that happened this week was the victories of Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in the Georgia Senate runoffs.  The Democratic majority in the Senate will provide for a smooth transition thanks to being able to confirm Biden’s nominations.  And it will lead to at least two years of smoother operation without Mitch McConnell blocking everything.
  • The security breakdown at the Capitol was shocking to those of us who understand how those buildings are secured and who have participated in demonstrations in DC.  It was shocking to learn that for the Trump rally, a fully-armed National Guard wasn’t deployed and that they did not have “kettles” set up to detain every one of those trespassers.  This incident–done at the hands of wannabe fascists–will completely alter how demonstrations are managed in DC.
  • Many Republicans, such as Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski, are all like, “Oooohhhh, *this* is the craziness and dictatorial tendencies you’ve been talking about for four years.”
  • Trump’s banning from Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will lead to slower mornings in the US.  I’ll be able to drink a cup of coffee before getting bombarded by news, which was previously sparked by Trump’s 6 a.m. tweets.
  • In the chaos of the last couple days, we shouldn’t forget that 21,000 people died from the coronavirus in the last seven days, and that 132,000 people are hospitalized.
  • Donald Trump Jr. will have a primetime show on One American News by September.  It’ll last until November because the network will be sick of having to find fill-in hosts. Ivanka lands at The Five on Fox News.  Eric won’t be on television because he can’t figure out how to shrink himself to fit on the screen.
  • I don’t know how you can watch the video of the coup at the Capitol and not agree that the white MAGA domestic terrorist were treated much, much different than the Black Lives Matter protesters.  Evidence:  National Guard members shot CS gas into peaceful protesters who gathered in front of a church so they would leave so Trump could get a photo op.  On the other hand, National Guard weren’t even allowed on Capitol grounds as insurrectionists destroyed the Capitol.
  • The rise of conservative trolling on NatZero is a sign that it’s working.
  • We are twelve days from Biden’s inauguration, and I fear that these may be the most consequential twelve days in our nation’s history since the Cuban Missile Crisis.  In the +/- 133 hours until Biden’s inauguration, the conduct of one man could change the direction of the nation.
  • The loss of 140,000 jobs in December is a dangerous sign for economic improvement in the First Quarter of 2021.  It demonstrates the setback that’s hitting the economy from the post-Thanksgiving wave of coronavirus.
  • In the upcoming days, a number of white men are going to get knocks on their homes’ doors from law enforcement officers to arrest them for acts undertaken at the Capitol.  It will be one of their children who tipped off the cops, because THEY don’t want chaos and mayhem.
  • I don’t expect to see Trump with a high public profile after January 20th, until campaigns for mid-term elections start in earnest in 2022.  He’ll be persona non grata at events until they need to raise money.
  • As far as I can see, at least 100 companies around the country have fired people who participated in the Capitol insurrection. They should not be able to apply for unemployment or for the coronavirus federal supplement.
  • Peanut butter M&Ms are the best M&Ms.
  • Stacey Abrams damn well better be put in charge of the 2022 midterm elections for the Democrats.  Her work in Georgia has been nothing short of stellar.
  • After the initial post-presidency afterglow spent together in Florida, Melania and Barron will spend most of their time in Manhattan.  Trump will live in Florida.
  • Social media just got more civil as of about 4 p.m ET today.
  • Winner:  The Constitution.  Loser:  Trumpism.  (But it’s not over yet.)
