One of the Michigan militia members accused of plotting to kidnap Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and conduct other acts of domestic terrorism has entered a plea agreement with federal authorities and is cooperating with investigators, USA Today reports.
In a federal court filing, prosecutors revealed that 22-year-old Ty Garbin of Wixom, Michigan, has entered into a plea agreement in which he vows to cooperate fully with the FBI and testify against his fellow conspirators. Fourteen people, including Garbin, have been arrested in the plot.
Garbin and others plotted to kidnap Whitmer, destroying roads and bridges to prevent law enforcement to come to the governor’s aid. They were going to conduct a faux trial of Whitmer for treason for implementing public health guidelines to stop the spread of the coronavirus, after which they were prepared to execute her.
Other militia groups, some of which Garbin and his associates may have been involved with, also plotted to violently take over the Michigan legislature, holding impromptu trials and executions of state legislators they feel were insufficiently loyal to their agenda.
Garbin faces life imprisonment on the kidnapping charge, but the plea deal suggests that Garbin may get a lesser sentence for his cooperation.
Lawyers for the other domestic terrorists involved in the plot has said that the plot was “just talk” to “blow off steam” and that they had no intention of carrying out the plot, although members carried out surveillance on a vacation home Whitmer uses and had detailed plans on destroying infrastructure to carry out their plan.
Curiously, Garbin comes from the same hometown, Wixom, that is home to Michael Joseph Foy, the man accused of beating a police officer with a hockey stick at the January 6th insurrectionist attack at the US Capitol.
