The American Civil Liberties Union, the organization at the forefront of protecting American civil liberties escounsed in the United States Constitution, has elected Deborah Archer as its president, ABC News reports.
Archer is the first Black person to be elected to the post in the ACLU’s 100-year history. The 69-member ACLU board of directors made the election in a virtual meeting over the weekend.
Since 2008, Archer is the president of the NYU Law School where she also teaches civil rights and racial justice as a law professor.
The ACLU took a central role in defending the civil rights of people in the United States during the Trump Administration, having filed more than 400 lawsuits dealing with immigrant rights, voting rights, LGBT rights, racial justice and other issues.
