ABC 7 in San Francisco has the story of Paul and Tenisha Tate Austin, Black homeowners in Marin County, California, who sank $400,000 into renovations on a house that had been worth about $900,000, only to have an appraiser value it at a little under $1 million. After they asked a White friend to pose as Tanisha and put photos of herself and family in the house, a second appraiser (also sent by the Austins’ mortgage lender) pegged the value at $1.482 million.
