Random thoughts Friday, Volume VII

  • White House communications staffer TJ Ducklo resigned February 13th, exactly four years to the day Michael Flynn resigned from the Trump administration.  Somehow, I don’t think they’ll be a special counsel appointed to investigate the president’s involvement this time.
  • Windmills work better to heat homes than Greg Abbott’s hot air.
  • The GOP wants to portray itself as a Big Tent party, including trying to market itself as the Party for union members, but it’s difficult to fill a tent if you’ll only allow people like you in, and you kick out everyone who doesn’t like clowns.
  • Boebert doesn’t know about Constitutional amendments.  Cawthorn doesn’t know the Vatican isn’t subject to US law.  And Junior apparently thinks Texas is run by Democrats.  The stupidity of Republicans is what’s controlling the Party.
  • The Fox News playbook for the Biden Presidency is clear:  characterize Biden as a doddering, mentally-compromised old man.  The prime time hosts have broadcast steady streams of lies about Biden’s work.  Unfortunately for them, Biden’s public appearances have demonstrated his skill and ability, and it’s made the insane rantings of Trump all the more obvious.
  • Limbaugh was my first exposure to toxic conservatism, devoid of facts and reality.  It was incubated by the undying fans of Ronald Reagan, whose legacy is now largely untruths and myths, not history. Limbaugh injected hate and derision into that mix.
  • In the summer, Texans lined up for food.  In the fall, Texans lined up for healthcare.  In the winter, Texans lined up for water.  Texas is officially a third-world country.
  • Ted Cruz spends four days a week in Washington, DC, but he wants us to believe that his wife (or their nanny) can’t handle taking them on a two-hour flight alone?
  • Every time there’s a successful NASA mission, I’m reminded of the amazing fact that we went to the Moon and back in a spacecraft with about 1% the computer power of a smartphone.
  • People who oppose the US re-entering the Paris Accords are simply pro-pollution.
  • In honor of those struggling without power, the Top Board Games as rated by me:  Scrabble, backgammon, Trivia Pursuit, Yahtzee and Clue.  Monopoly is for masochists, and no one really enjoys playing chess (although you’re obligated to buy a chess set when you’re in your 20s).
  • Remember when Republicans held scores of hearings over years because four people died in Benghazi?  Well, at least fifteen times that number have died in Republican-run states because of a winter storm, and Republicans are saying that there’s nothing to see; move along.  What makes it worse:  the Republicans running Texas were told in 2011 that their power grid would fail in cold weather, and they were told how to fix it.  They refused.
  • My dog is so mad at the Cruzes abandoning Snowflake, he’s organizing the Canine Caucus in  Texas to register voters.
  • One of the longest-serving radio news anchors released his final podcast today.  Mike Elston (a.k.a. Buzz Burbank) retired from reporting after more than four decades.  His voice, style and writing are unmatched from both entertainment and information standpoints.  His is a retirement well-earned, and his reporting will be missed.  Props, Buzz.
