The family of Andre Hill, an unarmed Black man shot and killed by Columbus, Ohio police as he walked out of a garage at a friend’s house, reached a $10 million settlement in a wrongful death suit against the city, NBC News reports.
Police were responding to a call from a neighbor complaining about a car that was repeatedly turning its engine on and off when the 47-year-old Hill emerged from a garage. Adam Coy, since fired from the police department, shot Hill four times. Hill did not have a gun, but was holding a cell phone.
Neither Coy nor his partner had their body cams on, but a “look back” feature allowed authorities to review what had happened. Coy has been indicted on charges of murder in commission of a felony, felonious assault and reckless homicide, and he’s being held on $1 million bail pending trial.
