Patrick Montgomery of Littleton, Colorado, was arrested January 17th for his participation in the January 6th domestic terrorism attack on the US Capitol. As part of his bail agreement, he was barred from possessing any guns. That shouldn’t have been an issue for him, given that he’s barred in the state from owning weapons because he’s a convicted felon, having been convicted of felony robbery.
According to the Washington Post, however, he flouted those restrictions, and he proved it by–of course–posting photos on social media. Last month, the 48-year-old posted a photo of him holding the corpse of a 170-pound mountain lion he allegedly killed with a .357 Magnum handgun after a pack of hunting dogs treed the big cat.
Now, prosecutors want to revise the terms of Montgomery’s release, limiting him to house arrest and wearing an GPS ankle monitor.
Montgomery was filmed no January 6th beating a Capitol Police officer and trying to wrest the officer’s baton from him. After pushing the officer to the ground, he was seem kicking him in the chest repeatedly. After being warned by friends that law enforcement were going to look for him, he posted on social media, “I’m not a scared cat or running from anything. I didn’t storm the castle violently. My group was let in peacefully by the police we were talking to with respect.”
This isn’t the first time Montgomery has run into trouble with state wildlife officials since his arrest for the Capitol attack. Eight days after his arrest by federal authorities, he used a pack of hunting dogs to pursue a bobcat 11 miles, where he treed the cat. He used a slingshot to knock the cat out of the tree in violation of state law and then let his dogs maul the cat to death.
Questions arose about Montgomery’s ability to get a license from the state to hunt the mountain lion. He applied for, and received, a tag to harvest the lion, despite being barred by state and federal officials from possessing a gun. He even had state wildlife officials inspect the dead cat, per state law. How he obtained a license to hunt animals using guns after he was banned from owning guns after he was convicted a string of armed robberies in the 1990s hasn’t been explained.
