When Pennsylvania Democratic state legislator Brian Sims took to the floor of the state house to comment on a bill regarding the cremation or burial of pre-birth fetal remains, he brought up some inconvenient facts that his Republican colleagues called “inflammatory.”
“It is not lost on me and I’m sure it’s not lost on many of the members here today that this legislation is just one more unnecessary overreach in a grossly predictably misogynistic agenda,” Sims stated. “An agenda pursued by a House–by a Party that is 100% white in a chamber that is 70% male.” As the Republicans started booing his comments, Sims responded, “Aw, your boos mean nothing to me.”
At that point, the House Majority Leader, Republican Kerry Benninghoff, took to the mic to call Sims’ comments “inflammatory to our members and this esteemed chamber. … I will not have our members impugned or insulted by this kind of behavior on this floor.”
Sims retorted, “Are you not 100% white?”
As that point the Speaker pro tem cut Sims’ mic off and had his comments stricken from the record.
