Less than two days before the massive collapse of the Champlain Towers South condo complex, a pool contractor preparing an estimate became so concerned about cracks in the concrete and standing water he found in the underground garage, he took photos.
Eleven people have been declared dead in the building collapse, with more than 150 missing, which fell last week.
According to the Miami Herald, the pool contractor, who asked to remain anonymous, saw large sections of cracked concrete, corroded rebar and water throughout the basement-level garage. He took photos that he provided to the Herald.
The contractor was asked for an estimate to undertake a cosmetic restoration of the pool and install new pool filtering and water circulation for the pool. Some of that water filtration equipment was located under the pool on the same level as the garage.
After seeing the damage, the contractor informed one of the maintenance staff of what he saw. “He thought it was waterproofing issues. I thought to myself, that’s not normal.”
USA Today reports that the building’s condo president sent a letter in April that the condition of the building’s garage had gotten “significantly worse” since an inspection two and half years before. He also noted that the concrete degradation was accelerating.
“We have discussed, debated, and argued for years now, and will continue to do so for years to come as different items come into play,” the letter to building residents, dated April 9th, stated.
