President Joe Biden is expected to decide by Tuesday if the United States should postpone the end-of-month deadline to evacuate Americans and friendly Afghans out of Afghanistan because of the massive logistics required, Reuters reports.
Thousands of Afghans are huddled along the perimeter of the airport in Kabul as they try to get passage aboard of flight out of the country. Thousands of Americans are also trying to get the Kabul to board flights. The US State Department have said embassy staff are in communication–through phone, text or email–with Americans to verify their status.
In the last ten days, US military have evacuated 30,000 from Afghanistan. Since Sunday morning, 16,000 people have left the country, including 11,000 via US military flights. Biden has ordered 6,000 military personnel to the country to assist with flights and evacuations. The Biden administration has also engaged private airlines who will be used to fly people out of Afghanistan.
The Biden Administration and the US State Department have vowed to help Afghans at risk of retaliation at the hands of the Taliban escape the country. Flights containing Americans and Afghans have been leaving Kabul hourly.
House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff said today that the US presence in Afghanistan will likely extend past next Tuesday. “I think [hitting the August 31st date is] possible but I think it’s very unlikely given the number of Americans who still need to be evacuated,” Schiff said.
