Voters in Switzerland approved overwhelming a referendum that legalizes marriage and adoption for LGBTQ couples, becoming one of the last nations in western Europe to recognize those civil rights, the New York Times reports.
The referendum was demanded by anti-equality advocates who were upset that the Swiss Parliament passed legislation provided for gay couples to marry and adopt children. They lost the referendum.
Also this weekend, the European micronation of San Marino, a majority-Catholic nation, voted to legalize abortion, with 77% of people voting to revoke a 150-year-old law that outlawed the medical procedure, the Associated Press reports.
