The volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma opened a new fissure overnight, with eight new earthquakes measuring up to magnitude 3.5 on the Richter scale shaking the island, the Associated Press reports.
More than six thousand people have been evacuated from the region in the immediate area around the volcano, which has produced significant lava flows. The 250-square mile island has a population of 85,000. No deaths or significant injuries due to the eruption have been reported.
Part of the Canary Islands, La Palma has largely continued continued to operate as the volcano bubbles. Spanish officials are promoting the volcano as a tourist attraction, but local residents are advised to stay inside.
