MAGA Congressman Paul Gosar tweeted a pretty batshit meme video in which he and his fellow extremists Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene’s faces are imposed on to the bodies of the heroes from the popular Japanese anime cartoon Attack on Titan on Sunday night, raising all the usual questions like “What the fuck is wrong with this guy” on the internet. Why the video was made in the first place is anyone’s guess, but the through-line from anime fandom to Trump fandom is not the hardest connection to make, as right wing internet cesspit 4chan was originally founded as a forum for anime and video game fans that evolved (alongside its successors 8chan and 8kun) into its current QAnon-incel-white nationalist shitshow.
Attack on Titan being probably one of the most recognizable anime series in a genre known for its idiosyncrasies and overall inaccessibility (to say nothing of lack of appeal) outside of its core fanbase makes it a somewhat natural choice, but also an interesting one given one of its plot points about a fictional renaissance-era nation besieged by giant man-eating mutants.
A church that worships the walls that protect the nation from the monsters outside. Getting crushed in the middle of their service. It was not meant as a shot at MAGAmerica because the comic book and then cartoon were produced long before demanding Mexico pay for a real-life wall that never actually got built was ever a thing. Life imitates weird Japanese cartoons sometimes.
