“The U.S. and European allies are weighing sanctions targeting Russia’s biggest banks and the country’s ability to convert rubles for dollars and other foreign currencies should President Vladimir Putin invade Ukraine,” Bloomberg News reports. Several Russian oligarchs have purchased homes in the United States over the last ten years and donated millions of dollars to GOP candidates.
Rudy Giuliani ally Lev Parnas was recently convicted in a scheme that involved distributing funds to GOP candidates, including the Trump campaign. There is still widespread suspicion that a substantial portion of the $30 Million spent by the National Rifle Association came from Russian sources. If those oligarchs are no longer able to transfer funds from Russia to the United States, impacts could include a severe reduction in the Republican Party’s fund-raising abilities. The best part is that while Republicans are sure to insist these kinds of financial contributions are “pointless”, they can’t openly claim that Biden’s attacking Republican Party finances because doing so would constitute a confession that the Republican Party has been routinely violating 52 U.S. Code § 30121 – Contributions and donations by foreign nationals, and constitute grounds for the Justice Department to initiate a thorough investigation of the finances of the Republican Party, and the assorted “educational” and “charitable” organizations that regularly provide astro-turfing propaganda to support GOP candidates.
