The Biden Administration is formulating a plan to supply natural gas to European countries in case Russia shuts off supplies of its natural gas run through pipelines as tensions grow regarding Russia’s military posturing toward Ukraine, The Guardian reports.
The US and its NATO allies are prepping severe sanctions to punish Russia if Russia invades Ukraine. Russia is a major natural gas supplier to Western Europe. However, as dependent as Russia is on foreign income for its natural gas and oil, it would essentially be crippling its economy if it were to cut off the supply.
“To ensure Europe is able to make it through the winter and spring we expect to be prepared to ensure alternative supplies covering a significant majority of the potential shortfall,” a senior official said.
